TITLE: Crew Learning Specialist  
REPORTS TO: Education Coordinator
CLASSIFIED: Part Time, Non-Exempt 
LOCATION: Brookings, SD

MISSION: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.  

JOB SUMMARY: The Crew Learning Specialist works alongside the Learning Lead to support the academic growth and success of youth. This position provides homework assistance, reinforces academic concepts, supports enrichment activities and programming, and helps youth build confidence and skills in a positive learning environment. The Crew Learning Specialist is also responsible for actively supervising members, supporting positive behavior, and maintaining a safe, welcoming, and engaging program environment. All Boys & Girls Club employees are expected to uphold the Club's Mission, Values, and commitment to Positive Youth Development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Support the academic growth, development, and overall progress of youth.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward youth learning, professional development, and teaching practices.
  • Encourage problem-solving, curiosity, critical thinking, and independent learning.
  • Provide academic support through homework assistance, special projects, enrichment activities, and other educational opportunities.
  • Support youth experiencing behavioral challenges using positive behavioral strategies and consistently follow established Success Plans.
  • Implement the 5 Key Elements for Positive Youth Development in daily interactions and programming.
  • Model and uphold the Club Values of Excellence, Impact Driven, Teamwork, and Good Character.
  • Assist with the implementation of program activities in accordance with Club policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Maintain responsibility for the safety, supervision, and security of youth within the facility and during program activities.
  • Communicate daily updates, concerns, incidents, and other relevant information to the supervisor at the end of each shift.
  • Attend required monthly all-staff meetings, bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the supervisor, and team meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with the supervisor to develop and achieve individual performance and professional development goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Previous work with elementary-aged children 
  • Commitment to working five days a week 
  • Must understand, implement, and demonstrate behavior management principles and other youth treatment modalities, per the Club training and Values of Fun, Supportive Relationships, Recognition, Opportunities and Expectations, and Safety.  
  • Must be able to provide leadership, on-the-spot and reflective feedback, and supervision to assigned employees to ensure they, too, understand and demonstrate principles of behavior management and other youth treatment modalities, per the Club training and Values of Fun, Supportive Relationships, Recognition, Opportunities and Expectations, and Safety.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Must be of the mental and physical capacity to observe, interact, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, classroom teachers at your assigned school site, etc., at the Club to ensure the safety of the space and others, provide guidance and reflection per the Club priority outcomes and goals 
  • Ability to stand/sit for long periods throughout a shift 
  • Ability to operate various types of general office equipment including PC, telephone, copier, etc. 
  • This position is considered to be safety-sensitive.
